Acts Commentary Recommendations

Studying Acts well requires more than good tools β€” it requires dependence on the same Holy Spirit whose work fills every page of the book. The commentaries listed below are ones I have personally used and found helpful, not as substitutes for prayerful study, but as aids to it. My hope is that these resources serve you as you seek the Spirit’s guidance in understanding and applying God’s Word.

This list is grouped by level of depth so readers can easily find something that fits their needs.

πŸ“— For Personal & Small Group Study

These resources are designed to help everyday readers understand Acts clearly. They emphasize clarity, accessibility, and practical insight for personal reading and group discussion.

Life Application Bible Commentary – Acts (Bruce Barton & Grant Osborne)
A practical and accessible guide that connects the narrative of Acts to everyday Christian living. This commentary is equally helpful for devotional reading or for preparing for leading a Bible study or sermon.

Exalting Jesus in Acts (Tony Merida)
A Christ-centered exposition that keeps the focus on the risen Jesus as the driving force behind the early church’s mission. This series is hit or miss for me over all, but the Acts volume was top notch and I found it frequently offered valuable insights.

Holman New Testament Commentary – Acts (Kenneth Gangel)
A straightforward evangelical commentary that walks through Acts with clarity and pastoral warmth.Β

These resources are well suited for Bible teachers, small group leaders, and sermon preparation. They provide deeper exegetical insight while remaining readable and pastorally grounded.

New American Commentary – Acts (John Polhill)
A trusted mid-level commentary that combines careful scholarship with accessible explanation for teachers and serious students. One of the commentaries I turned to most frequently while studying passages in Acts.

New International Commentary on the New Testament – The Book of Acts (F.F. Bruce)
A classic scholarly commentary from one of the most respected New Testament scholars of the modern era. Most of my commentaries are digital in Logos Bible software, but I’ve got a hard copy of this if you are at Haven and want to borrow it.

Acts: A Logion Press Commentary (Stanley M. Horton)
A detailed commentary written from a Pentecostal perspective, giving particular attention to the work of the Holy Spirit in Acts. With the significance of the Holy Spirit in Acts I chose this commentary to hear from a more charismatic perspective even though I don’t agree in every area.

πŸ“•For Advanced / Specialized Study

These are more technical commentaries for in-depth study. They engage closely with Greek, rhetorical structure, and broader scholarly discussion.

The Acts of the Apostles: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary (Ben Witherington III)
A thorough and detailed commentary that illuminates Acts through careful attention to its historical context and rhetorical structure. This approach works particularly well considering the role of the expansion of the gospel to various cultures and because of the numerous speeches throughout Acts.Β

A note for Logos users: If you want this volume be sure to get it in the Logos 7 Methodist collection. This is cheaper than buying the commentary by itself and comes with several other Scoio-Rhetorical commentaries as well as other useful resources.Β

πŸ“•For Advanced / Specialized Study

This classic work shows how the church has historically read and applied Scripture. It is more challenging than modern commentaries, but valuable for perspective and depth.

The Biblical Illustrator – Acts (Joseph Exell)
A rich Victorian-era preaching resource that draws on a wide range of illustrations and expositions to bring the text of Acts to life.
