Genesis Reading Plan - Haven Fellowship Church

Genesis Reading Plan

As a church, we are reading through Genesis during the month of September as part of our series, Genesis: God’s Design for His People. Genesis is the book of beginnings, introducing the foundations of the biblical story and revealing God’s design for humanity, His plan of redemption, and His purpose in forming a people for Himself.

This reading plan is designed to help you read through the entire book of Genesis over the course of the month. Whether you are reading on your own, with your family, or with a small group, my prayer is that God will use His Word to deepen your faith and strengthen our unity as a church family.

As you read Genesis, take time to reflect on what each passage teaches about God, humanity, sin, grace, and God’s unfolding plan of redemption. Look for ways these themes point forward to Christ and help us understand our identity as God’s people today.

September Memory Verse

Throughout this series, we will also be memorizing Ephesians 4:15-16 (NIV):

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Week 1: God's Design and Humanity's Fall (Genesis 1–15)

Genesis begins with God’s perfect creation and His design for humanity to live in fellowship with Him and one another. Sin quickly disrupts that design, bringing suffering, division, and death into the world. Yet even as humanity rebels, God demonstrates grace and begins unfolding His plan of redemption, culminating in His covenant promises to Abram.

Reflection: How can our church better reflect God’s design for relationships as we seek to live together as one body in Christ?

☐ Day 1 – Genesis 1–3
☐ Day 2 – Genesis 4–6
☐ Day 3 – Genesis 7–9
☐ Day 4 – Genesis 10–11
☐ Day 5 – Genesis 12–15

Week 2: God Calls and Shapes His People (Genesis 16–27)

God continues His work through Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Rebekah. Though these believers often struggle with fear, doubt, and failure, God remains faithful to His promises. Their stories remind us that God forms His people through grace rather than human perfection.

Reflection: Where is God calling you to trust His promises and follow Him in faith, even when the future seems uncertain?

☐ Day 6 – Genesis 16–18
☐ Day 7 – Genesis 19–21
☐ Day 8 – Genesis 22–23
☐ Day 9 – Genesis 24
☐ Day 10 – Genesis 25:1–27:29

Week 3: God Works Through Imperfect Families (Genesis 27–38)

The lives of Jacob and his family are marked by conflict, deception, forgiveness, and growth. Despite their shortcomings, God continues accomplishing His purposes and preserving His covenant promises. These chapters remind us that God’s people depend on His faithfulness, not their own.

Reflection: How can God’s patience with His people help you show greater grace, humility, and love toward others in Christ’s church?

☐ Day 11 – Genesis 27:30–30:24
☐ Day 12 – Genesis 30:25–31:55
☐ Day 13 – Genesis 32–34
☐ Day 14 – Genesis 35–36
☐ Day 15 – Genesis 37–38

Week 4: God Preserves and Unites His People (Genesis 39–50)

The story of Joseph demonstrates God’s sovereign care for His people. Through betrayal, hardship, reconciliation, and restoration, God accomplishes His purposes and preserves the family through whom His promises will continue. Joseph’s reconciliation with his brothers offers a powerful picture of forgiveness, grace, and God’s ability to bring good from difficult circumstances.

Reflection: Ephesians teaches that Christ builds up His body as each part does its work. How can you contribute to the unity, growth, and strengthening of our church family this week?

☐ Day 16 – Genesis 39:1–41:36
☐ Day 17 – Genesis 41:37–42:38
☐ Day 18 – Genesis 43–44
☐ Day 19 – Genesis 45–47
☐ Day 20 – Genesis 48–50
